Every business has a buying cycle. Some are short, and some are longer. Basically, a buying cycle is the process it takes to get someone from the beginning of the buying process to the end.

Online marketing is more cost-effective than all other types of marketing. One of the reasons why online marketing is the most effective is the fact that you can cater your marketing message to specific visitors based on where they are in a buying cycle.

There are 3 stages of buying cycles in online marketing:

1) Online Marketing - Beginning of Buying Cycle

For most industries, the beginning stages of the buying cycle are focused on information gathering. This is when consumers are doing their basic research about the product or services they are interested in.

Generally speaking, they are not ready to make a purchase at this stage.

The way you know someone is in the early stages of a buying cycle is the search term or terms they are using to find a website. Here are some examples of search terms that may be used in the early stages of a buying cycle:

- dvd player reviews; best dvd players; dvd player comparisons

- moisturizer reviews; top rated moisturizers; organic moisturizers

- flooring options; flooring suggestions; flooring costs

As you will note, these search terms are rather broad and are focused on gathering information.

The key to succeed in marketing to these visitors is to have the information they are looking for on their website. Do not try to sell to them too quickly, provide them with what they want - information. You can build consumer confidence and loyalty.

Provide them with more detailed information in exchange for their email address. For example, "DVD Player Reviews, Including the Most Recent Models" and have a sign-up form. This will help you stay in touch with them through the rest of the buying cycle.

2) Online Marketing - Middle Stages of Buying Cycle

After consumers have the basic information they want, they tend to get a little more specific in their research. They may or may not be ready to buy, so in these stages a little more aggressive sales practices are appropriate.

Here are some examples of search terms for people in the mid-stages of the buying cycle:

- Sony HD dvds; Best Pioneer DVD players; Sony and Pioneer DVD players

- Argan oil moisturizers; olive oil moisturizers

- Cork flooring; cork flooring styles; stain proof carpeting

In these search terms the consumer is a little more focused in their research. They made some choices and now they are trying to get the final pieces of the puzzle put together.

Again, information is important, but they want more specific information. They should find pages specific to the brands or options they are looking for. If they land on a page that is too broad they will click off your site and go to another. You do not want to lose someone in this stage of the buying cycle. Give them information specific to the search terms that brought them to you.

3) Online Marketing - Late Stages of Buying Cycle

Consumers in the final stages of the buying cycle are the low hanging fruit. These are the people most sites focus on. The problem is, if your site is not the one that helped them through the earlier stages of the buying cycle, they have no consumer confidence or loyalty to you. Do not skip putting emphasis on the early stages.

Consumers in the final stages are ready to buy. You know they are ready to buy when they use search terms like:

- Sony DVD 8300; best price on Sony DVD 8300; price Sony DVD 8300

- Olay Argan Moisturizer; Olay Argan Moisturizer on sale

- Woodmere Cork flooring; Woodmere Cork flooring wholesale pricing

At this point they are ready to buy and they want to find the best place to buy from. You want a hard sales effort on the landing pages. You should make them want to click on "add to cart" at this point.

To get them to buy, you need to give them confidence in your pricing; company policies and reputation. Highlight the things most important to them (price; shipping; return policy).

Engage consumers at all stages of the buying cycle and you will be able to outsell your competition. Engage them early, stay in touch and give them what they want - if you do this, you will succeed online.
